Pool decks in Charleston
A pool deck takes more abuse than any other hardscape: bare feet, pool chemicals, standing water and a Charleston summer. We build pool decks in concrete pavers or travertine on a compacted base, with coping along the edge of the pool and a fall that sends splash water away from it.

Size and material decide most of it. Breaking out an old concrete deck and replacing coping add their own lines, quoted with the rest.
The ground around a pool gets backfilled when the pool goes in, and it settles if nobody compacted it. If we find a soft spot, you hear about it and the fix before we build over it.

Pavers or travertine around a pool
Both work. Concrete pavers cost less, come in more colors and handle heavy use. Travertine costs more and looks like it came with the house, and its open, tumbled surface gives bare feet more to grip. Either one lifts out in sections when a pool line underneath needs work, which a poured concrete deck cannot offer.
Salt water pools are harder on natural stone. Salt carried out on wet feet can pit soft stone over time, so we seal travertine around salt pools and tell you when to reseal it.
Summer storms, salt air and HOAs around the pool
Summer storms dump water fast. Charleston County averages about 45 inches of rain a year. We build the deck to drain away from the pool and away from the house, and where the yard sits low, we add a drain so the deck does not flood the lawn.
Salt air near the water. On the islands and along the marsh, salt air works on stone and metal alike. We seal natural stone and use stainless fittings on drains and grates.
HOAs and the fence. HOAs across Mount Pleasant and the island communities expect to approve deck materials and the pool fence. We put that package together with you.

Pavers or travertine for a pool deck?
Pavers cost less and come in more colors. Travertine costs more, looks richer and has a tumbled surface that gives your feet more grip. Both lift out in sections for repairs, which a poured deck cannot.
Can you put pavers over my old concrete pool deck?
Sometimes, with thin pavers over a sound slab, if the extra height works at the coping and the doors. Cracked or settling concrete has to come out first.
Do pool deck pavers get hot?
Every surface gets hot in a Charleston July. Lighter colors absorb less sun than dark ones, so we steer pool decks toward light pavers or travertine.
Why do pool decks sink?
The ground around a pool is backfill, and it settles if nobody compacted it. We dig out, lay the base in layers and compact every one before a paver goes down.
Can you replace my pool coping?
Yes, as part of a deck job. We set new coping along the edge and tie the deck into it, and we work with your pool company where the pool shell needs attention.
How long does a pool deck take?
